A Conversation With Felix Contreras of NPR program Alt.Latino

Show co-host talks to KSUT about exciting directions in Latin alternative music. Alt.Latino debuts this Friday night at 10 on KSUT.

KSUT welcomes the NPR Music program Alt.Latino to our programming lineup. The show debuts Friday, February 12 at 10:00 p.m., as part of our World Music Night.

Alt.Latino, which is also a popular podcast, is co-hosted by Felix Contreras and Jasmine Garsd. Each week, they introduce listeners to new alternative Latin music, including genres such as cumbia, Mexican garage rock, Panamanian rap, heavy metal mariachi and many more boundary-blurring sounds.

Contreras and Garsd also appear frequently on NPR's All Things Considered and Weekend Edition Sunday, talking about the latest in Latin alternative music.

KSUT's Mark Duggan talked to Felix Contreras recently about the roots of Alt.Latino, and what Four Corners listeners can expect from the show.

The conversation also included his picks for the hottest new Latin alternative sounds, and an anecdote about how the show - and its music - have a big fan in a 70-year-old non-Spanish speaking grandmother from rural North Dakota. Contreras called that a great example of how Alt.Latino appeals to people across generations and ethnic lines.

Alt.Latino debuts Friday, February 12 at 10:00 p.m. on KSUT.
