While the DCCC has spent some money to benefit former Aspen City Councilman Dwayne Romero, other Democratic groups have effectively sat on the sidelines while Republican U.S. Rep. Jeff Hurd has benefited from big GOP spending on the race.

According to an internal poll from the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC), the House Democrats’ campaign arm, Democratic challenger Dwayne Romero leads Republican incumbent Rep. Jeff Hurd by 1 point. The 3rd Congressional District has not voted for a Democrat since 2008.

Republican incumbent Rep. Jeff Hurd faces a challenge from combat veteran and former Aspen City Councilor Dwayne Romero for Colorado's Congressional District 3. The massive district covers much of western and southern Colorado.

In this extended interview, Hurd spoke with CPR News about how the Iran war is going, his priorities for the district and whether he supports Victor Marx as the Republican candidate for governor of Colorado.

At the beginning of this year’s election cycle, Hurd appeared to be cruising toward an easy reelection. But as President Trump’s approval ratings have cratered nationally in recent months, suddenly the 3rd Congressional District is back on the map.

The letter comes as a budget blueprint, which could contain steep Medicaid cuts, makes its way through Congress.

Hurd, a Republican, is among a small group of Republicans openly challenging President Trump's authority over tariffs. Hurd is co-sponsoring a bill that would require Congressional approval.
