The Center for Disease Control says that the new more contagious Delta variant is the dominant coronavirus strain in the country. Colorado Governor Jared Polis announced Wednesday that the Delta variant now accounts for most of the positive cases in the state. KSUT’s Sarah Flower has more.

From January to the end of June, Colorado is reporting almost 96% of all hospitalizations and deaths in the state due to Covid-19 were from people that were unvaccinated. Roughly 71% of all adults in the state have received at least one dose of the vaccine. In a press conference yesterday, Governor Jared Polis urged residents to protect themselves from this more contagious strain of the virus.

Governor Polis 00:26
The Delta variant is now the majority of new cases in Colorado. That means that unvaccinated Coloradans are still at very high risk. And of course, I encourage every unvaccinated Coloradan first and foremost to get vaccinated, but until that vaccination protection takes hold, wear a mask when you're around others and protect yourself by avoiding interactions with others, especially in crowded indoor areas.

San Juan Basin Public Health Department also says that they are seeing a rise of the Delta variant across the region. Polis announced that as part of the state's vaccine incentive program, starting today, anyone aged 12 or older who receives their first or second dose of the vaccine is eligible to receive a $100 Walmart gift card. Those gift cards will be available as supplies last in their mobile vaccine bus. That bus will be in Ignacio at the Public Library next Thursday, July 29. Also on the 29th the bus will be at the Walmart in Cortez from 2 to 7 PM.
