The third annual Southwest Colorado Women in Business 2021 Award Ceremony, hosted by Ballantine Communications, the Durango Herald and the Cortez Journal will be held in person this year. The event recognizes nine outstanding women across several different categories that work and live in both Montezuma and La Plata counties. The ceremony, which almost didn't happen this year, is usually held in March to honor Women's History Month. Cindy Fisher is the coordinator for the event. She says that the honorees are chosen based on community wide nominations, and then furthered by a selection committee.

Cindy Fisher  00:40

The committee looks for women who not only are a big part of their business and or industry, but also a big part of their community with volunteer work and other things like that, that merely make them stand out in that particular category or any one of the categories and in the community that they work in.

This year's honorees include Rachel Landis under the agriculture category; Julie James Ott for business owners; for community ambassador Briggen Wrinkle; Elizabeth Kinahan is the honoree for creative industries; Kerisha Small for education and childcare. Sarah Tescher for the health and wellness category, Char Day is the honoree for nonprofits and volunteers; Sarah Tingey for the category of professionals. And lastly, outstanding Woman of the Year for 2021 goes to Liane Jollon. Beverly Capelin won the award for last year's Southwest Colorado Women in Business Award. She says there is certainly a common theme through all of the honorees.

Beverly Capelin  01:49

Last year was very moving to me to see how people put together their worlds and how they foster their own inspirations. I could not find a common denominator other than their passion.
