The community is invited to celebrate the launch of the City of Durango Native American Heritage Month at the Center for Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College. Events start at 4PM on Friday, October 10th with art, food, and family-friendly activities.
Kick off the evening with a guided tour of From the Fringes: Diné Textiles that Disrupt, a powerful exhibition exploring the legacy of Diné (Navajo) weaving—from historic pieces to bold, contemporary works that challenge norms and honor cultural resilience, led by a Southwest Studies Fellow.
Enjoy creative, hands-on youth activities inspired by Diné weaving, and sample Indigenous cuisine served by the Big Picture Native American Club, featuring dishes from New Native Kitchen by Freddie Bitsoie, former executive chef at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.

4 Corners Tabletop Night is a place for tabletop gamers in the 4 Corners area to meet up and get their miniatures to the table. We play a variety of games and welcome players of all skill levels. Author, journalist ultra runner Katie Arnold will be in conversation with local writer Heather Hansman. Arnold is a longtime journalist and bestselling author of Brief Flashings in the Phenomenal World: Zen and the Art of Running Free (2024), a finalist for the 2024 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Awards, which tells the story of a traumatic wilderness accident and her path to healing. Her critically acclaimed memoir, Running Home, was published in 2019.
