Native American Heritage Month Launch

Native American Heritage Month Launch

The community is invited to celebrate the launch of the City of Durango Native American Heritage Month at the Center for Southwest Studies at Fort Lewis College. Events start at 4PM on Friday, October 10th with art, food, and family-friendly activities.

Kick off the evening with a guided tour of From the Fringes: Diné Textiles that Disrupt, a powerful exhibition exploring the legacy of Diné (Navajo) weaving—from historic pieces to bold, contemporary works that challenge norms and honor cultural resilience, led by a Southwest Studies Fellow.

Enjoy creative, hands-on youth activities inspired by Diné weaving, and sample Indigenous cuisine served by the Big Picture Native American Club, featuring dishes from New Native Kitchen by Freddie Bitsoie, former executive chef at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian.
