Firefighters Busy with Lightning Strikes

DURANGO – July 11, 2013, 3:00 PM - The Durango Interagency Fire Dispatch Center reports 1,570 lightning strikes across southwestern Colorado within the past 24 hours, with three starting small wildfires.  Two engines and a helicopter have responded to a ¼-acre wildfire in Mancos Canyon on the Ute Mountain Ute Reservation, and a helicopter is en route to check out a smoke report in Pine Tree Canyon on the Southern Ute Reservation.

On the San Juan National Forest Pagosa Ranger District, Pagosa Fire and Rescue and U.S. Forest Service engines are responding to a single-tree fire in Captain Beal Canyon near the New Mexico state line.
