The Chimney Rock Interpretive Association will host the free lecture "Exploring Astronomy and Culture at Chimney Rock" at 6PM on Friday, October 10th at the Archuleta County CSU extension building. Chimneyrockco.org has more information.
with world-renowned archaeoastronomer Dr. J. McKim “Kim” Malville, professor emeritus at the University of Colorado Boulder. Dr. Malville has spent decades studying sacred sites worldwide and was among the first in centuries to document the Major Lunar Standstill at Chimney Rock.
In this engaging talk, he will explore the connections between astronomy, architecture, and spiritual life at Chimney Rock, including solstice alignments, the 1054 supernova, and the building of Great Houses by Chacoan masons.
This event is free and open to the public. Donations are appreciated to support CRIA’s ongoing educational programming.
The Durango Arts Center presents the exhibit “Nature’s Tapestry in Plein Air” (Plein rhymes with ten) through October 25, 2025 in the Barbara Conrad Gallery. 44 works by local artists are on exhibit along with 10 entries from the Quick Draw competition. All are welcome, amateur astronomers and enthusiasts alike, for a family friendly event discussing and observing our night skies – the moon, planets, star clusters, galaxies, and nebulas. Just before sunset, an expert from the Durango Astronomical Society will lead discussions on what we will be seeing that evening, providing informative backstories and fascinating fun facts about the night sky we see everyday. Each summer month will have slightly different focuses depending on that month’s night sky. All discussions will end with open telescope viewings and Q&A sessions. Don’t miss out on these memorable experiences!

Workout using your own body weight or light hand weights to work all the body parts! The free classes are always similar in style but always different moves to keep it fun and fresh. You’ll need a yoga mat & light hand weights. If you don’t have them, they are extras that can be used. Each class is around 35 min. long. Modifications are always available. It’s always a fun, upbeat, encouraging, and a great workout. Taught by Tammy Williams, certified fitness instructor. All ages and fitness levels are welcome!
