SW Colorado Fire Update – October 21, 2012, 6:00 PM

Vallecito Fire

Firefighters completed dozer line south of Hummingbird Lane today; it extends all the way from County Road 501 up to the Freeman Park road. The hotshot crews felled snags along the dozer line to increase the defensibility of the line.  A helicopter made a few bucket drops on the west side this afternoon as the fire made a small push against the line when the wind increased.  The fire is holding steady at 222 acres and 25% containment.

The Type 3 Team will be turning the fire back to the Columbine Ranger District Monday morning at 7:00 AM.  Two 20-person hotshot crews will remain to monitor the fire’s behavior and call for aircraft as needed.

Goblin Fire

The fire has reached the top of the “Twilight ridge” on the north and is burning at an elevation of nearly 11,000 feet. Small pockets of interior fuels continue to burn on the Goblin Fire.  The acreage is still reported at 700 acres. This is a full suppression fire, however, due to the steep terrain and unsafe conditions, firefighters are confining it within certain parameters. Actions will be taken to suppress the fire when it approaches those parameters and becomes accessible. Two firefighters will be on scene for the next several days to monitor the fire’s growth and behavior. There are adequate aerial and ground resources available to assist, if needed. The fire will be monitored by infrared until the fire shows reduced activity.
