Tune-in for Ranky Tanky In-studio Session, Wednesday at 1:30

Peter Frank Edwards

KSUT welcomes Ranky Tanky for an in-studio session, Wednesday, April 24 at 1:30 PM.  This band of native South Carolinians mixes the low-country traditions with large doses of jazz, gospel, funk and R&B and the soulful sounds of the Gullah culture.

Ranky Tanky performs Wednesday night at the Community Concert Hall at Fort Lewis College, tickets at durangoconcerts.com.

Ranky Tanky released its debut album on Oct. 20, 2017, and by December of that year, the group had been profiled on NPR's "Fresh Air" with Terry Gross, and the album had soared to the #1 position on the Billboard, I-Tunes and Amazon Jazz charts.

"Gullah" comes from West African language meaning "a people blessed by God." "Ranky Tanky" translates loosely as "Work It" or "Get Funky." In this spirit, the quintet performs timeless music of the Gullah culture born in the southeastern Sea Island region of the United States.

From playful game songs and ecstatic shouts, to heartbreaking spirituals and delicate lullabies, the musical roots of Charleston. S.C. are "rank" and fertile ground from which these contemporary arts are grateful to have grown.
