IAN BURUMA has written extensively on Asian and European culture and politics. He has just written a book, "The Wages of Guilt: Memories of War in Germany and Japan," (Farrar.Straus.Giroux) which explores the different ways in which the people of Germnay and Japan remember World War II. In his book, he seeks to explain why Germnay has a collective sense of guilt over its war crimes, while Japan tries to forget its involvement in the war.
