High Country News Senior Editor Jonathan Thompson talks to KSUT about his recent cover article looking at the greenhouse gas “hot spot” that hovers over the San Juan Basin region.
Scientists first noticed in 2009 that a highly concentrated plume of mostly methane gas hovers over an area of the Four Corners that includes Ignacio and Bayfield; and parts of Durango and northwest New Mexico.
Thompson's research resulted in a High Country News cover story Unlocking the Mystery of the Four Corners Hot Spot in the August 31 issue.
Thompson is participating in a forum on the methane hotspot Tuesday evening in Farmington. He'll be joined by representatives from the Sierra Club, San Juan Citizens Alliance, and others, to talk about the hot spot's impact on health and community, and to look at pending federal rules that could reduce methane emissions.
