As part of the change, Montrose High School will rename themselves the Red Hawks, changing from the Indians. Centennial Middle School will retire the Braves name in favor of the Bears.
The Montrose County School District board selected new mascots for Montrose High and Centennial Middle School at a special session earlier this week.
The district estimates that will cost up to $1 million to complete the change. It's driven by a new Colorado law outlawing derogatory school mascots.
