The forum, held Wednesday, September 30, 2020, featured Republican Joyce Rankin debating Dr. Mayling Simpson, Democrat. Rankin, the incumbent, was appointed to the position in 2015 and elected in 2016.
The state Board of Education is responsible for the “general supervision of public schools.” Its members are elected from districts that align with the state's congressional districts. District 3 encompasses most of western Colorado and includes Durango, Cortez, Pagosa Springs, Grand Junction, Aspen, and Pueblo.
