Firefighters Responding to Lightning Strikes

June 29, 2013, 5:15 pm --

DURANGO – Following this afternoon’s thunderstorms, firefighters are responding to two new lightning starts.

Durango Interagency Fire Dispatch reports that an engine crew has been dispatched to a single log burning on Missionary Ridge several miles west of Colvig Silver Camp on the San Juan National Forest.

On the Colorado/Utah border, a helicopter and single engine air tanker are being dispatched to a fire near County Road P and Bug Point on Bureau of Land Management and private land. The fire poses a threat to a structure one mile south.  No further information is available at this time.

Smokejumpers on the Whitehead Fire two miles northeast of Molas Lake on the edge of the Weminuche Wilderness report that this single-tree fire has been contained.  They expect to have it controlled later this evening and will stay at the site overnight.

To report a fire on public lands, please contact the Durango Interagency Fire Dispatch Center at 970 385-1324 or call 911.
